Hand Made Wooden Grip Panels

Here are two little projects I’ve been working on.

The first is a pair of grips for a 2013 MacDev Clone GTi. The originals had become brittle and started crumbling so with no factory grips available I decided to make my own.

I scanned in the original grips and created a vector file to cut out a new pair from 4mm timber on the laser cutter. After a bit of hand finishing and a coat of lacquer I tried them out but they looked a little plain on the Clone with its splash anodising.

So I grabbed a Star Wars “Clone Trooper” logo off the web, scaled it down and created a vector file to laser engrave onto some contrasting timber. I then cut out the logo and a corresponding hole in each grip using the laser before gluing them in. The final touch was cutting out a screen window in acrylic on the bandsaw and gluing it into the left hand grip.

All in all I thought they came out way better than expected.

The second project is a pair of 45 pattern wooden grip panels. They’re made from Blackwood with a Jarrah stain and finished in a satin lacquer. After thinning the timber down to 3mm and cutting the blanks out with a laser cutter I profiled them on a linisher. They are shown here fitted to an early nineties British made Kenimex Scorpion pump.
